| Lucid Dreaming |

In our normal sleeping dreams, we have no control. Chaotic sequences of events are
seemingly random and a feeling of helplessness is a common element in nightmares: the
feeling that you could escape if you could only force yourself to move. Lucid
dreaming is where the mind is made to consciously recognise that it is dreaming. With that step made,
a disciplined mind can take control of the dream, visualising events and actions, and
experiencing dream phenomena as if they were real. It is if you like, the ultimate virtual reality, free of the need of a computer.
Dreams occur in so-called REM sleep: Rapid Eye Movement: the eyes of the sleeper begin to flicker this way and that. Commercially available devices worn over the eyes can detect this movement. This will trigger a sound or a flashing light: something the brain will register even in its sleeping state and recognise. Using this as an anchor, the dreamer can then begin to shape the dream according to his or her desires. Since a dream is free from the restraints of any physical requirements, metamorphosis into an animal form requires only that the dreamer can visualise such an event. It goes without saying that there is more to lucid dreaming than this. The process does require training: mental discipline is a prime requirement, for unordered thoughts will lead the dreamer back into chaotic dreaming, while excitement over success is liable to wake the dreamer up! However, the phenomena is well-documented and many people will swear as to its effectiveness, siting applications ranging from practicing physical skills whilst dreaming, to experiencing ultimate sexual fantasies.
